টেট্রাসাইক্লিন ১৯৫৩ সালে পেটেন্ট করা হয়েছিল এবং ১৯৭৮ সালে বাণিজ্যিকভাবে ব্যবহার করা হয়েছিল। এটি বিশ্ব স্বাস্থ্য সংস্থার প্রয়োজনীয় ওষুধের তালিকায় রয়েছে। টেট্রাসাইক্লিন একটি জেনেরিক ওষুধ হিসেবে পাওয়া যায়। টেট্রাসাইক্লিন মূলত স্ট্রেপ্টোমাইসিস ধরনের ব্যাকটেরিয়া (Streptomyces aureofaciens) থেকে তৈরি করা হয়েছিল।
